Does anyone here shoot barebow recurve?

Just asking as it seems a minority pursuit.

Also has anyone got any tips on sighting at a 100 yards? My pile is already top of the target at 80y. At this distance I anchor under the chin, to get good elevation.

Cheers

44 views and no replies... Am in the right sub-forum for barebow discussion? I kind of have the feeling I've goofed it. Either that or I'm the only one doing it :eye-poppi

Can't be surely?

I have done a few Portsmouths barebow but not long range outdoor stuff. Are you using nice light weight ACE's?

Well, I was going to reply and say my son does and so does my friend, but to be honest I didn't feel that it was very useful! :)

Thanks Rachel, Uller & bkupris,
It's good to get a response, in any case. Well, I don't shoot wooden or ACE arrows, just bog standard aluminum. They go together with my non-wooden Winstar and limbs. I guess that makes me a no-no for traditional archers and an irrelevance for 'proper' recurve archers :cryin:

I'm getting well into it and haven't looked back since ditching my sight and longrod. I'm going for my first class and I'm hopefully on course for it.

The week before last I shot a Long National (needed 234) and got 291 and last week a FITA 70 (needed 232) and got 305. I'm perhaps thinking to push the envelope and try for Bowman?

So perhaps I'd be better off posting in the recurve section as I didn't see a section for vagrants and misfits. ;)

Not seen this - yes I shoot barebow recurve - with a 36lb "Training" bow (a 20yr old Beauchamp Hurricane from Quicks).

Regularly shoot 100yards - with XX75s I used to be point on - but with the new string I've got I'm about an inch above the target face now (no idea why).
With woods (11/32s - too heavy for the bow, but they were presents!), I'm shooting almost totally blind! (target disappears completely behind my hand).

I normally shoot field with woods though.

Hi Tony,
I shoot full recurve winstar2 with allys indoors, the indoor season before last I decided to have a crack at recurve barebow so took all my bits off for 1 night. I shot a 462 (if I remember right) Portsmouth which I was quite pleased with and thought I would pursue this style as it was a club record. However, like you, found I was on my own both in the club and when I tried to find out more outside. So being a social archer and competitive I dropped it - end of barebow career!
We did have somone else shooting an Osprey which is a 1 piece wooden recurve but has an arrow shelf so didn't qualify in the general trad recurve category and he moved to longbow for the same reason.
I am not saying this to dissuade you, but my own experience was that in a non specialised club you may have to be content with competing with your own benchmarks and the handicap/classification tables.
Sorry it's a bit of a miserable tale. Good luck though, you should stick with it if you don't need the direct competition on a weekly basis. Get yourself to a tournament and let us know how you get on.

....& observed slowness of response , but didn't want to be first.

I shoot barebow (well actually any bow without sights)
but don't tend to take part in anything too formal - did shoot barebow in
a couple of GNAS clouts last year.
My club is unaffiliated although I am a GNAS member through another club.
I shoot both woods & alloys as the occasion grabs me, using a variety of bows:
1-piece recurves, TD-recurves, AFB, longbow (woods only).

I only recently bought my first set of alloys (I do have alloys but never bought
any new for my own bows) 12 X Gamegetters 2315s for my AFB - I usually shoot
tonkin bamboo, but thought I'd try alloys to eliminate difference/better match arrows to evaluate/concentrate on my technique.

Can't help with your aiming though, I don't consciously use anything to aim with - I point & shoot. Have been shooting trad. longbow clout target (30" diam, 4" spot set at 45 degree) at 180yds - don't think I've ever hit it yet & same target at 100yds.

Spent last night shooting longbow(s) at 50-60yd 80cm target face preparing for a National next week - my first BLBS event.

Hi Deadloose,
Yeah, there's not much of it about but I'm quite hooked on it now. There is one other bloke in my club doing BB so it's not too bad.
I'm planning to enter my first tournament on the 7th August at Burton Constable in East Yorks. I'll let you know how I get on.

Instinctive - the real McCoy. I've seen it done once at my club by a bloke with a flat bow and it was quite awesome.

I don't have a classification but the clubs members may have several for me!

We are a relatively young club (18 months - 30+ members, 20 active, most at 1 shoot=26), deliberately un-affiliated, with a good mix of:
- dyed-in-the-wool freestyle target archers (4), 2 increasingly going barebow, 1 took off all his accessories to try barebow on our 2d/3d shoot but once was enough for him;
- freestyle target archers (5), 1 does shoot barebow with a field bow;
- barebow archers (12+) - with alloys, some also shoot HT style with woods, some are trying freestyle;
- AFB archers (3), mostly shooting woods (NFAS AFB style), some alloys (NFAS HT style);
- longbow archers (3), woods only.

That's what it's all about. I personally feel that I've finally contacted what archery's about (for me anyway). It sounds like a great, creative club you've got there.

I was just looking at the scores needed to get master bowman barebow on a York round. Ouch! Has anyone ever managed that?

Tony, my son has only just started barebow recurve (with metal arrows) after shooting longbow and hunbow. He did it because there is a guy at our club who shoots bb and is really fantastic, it's quite inspiring! We have an excellent lady bb as well, and a few others who dabble! ;) If you enjoy it, do it! You can always look up other club records and stuff if you'd like a benchmark as to how you're doing? (My club is Mayflower!)

Berny, for some reason I thought you were a Bernie from another forum, who's female, and I've been completely intimidated by your strength! But I've stalked on to your club website and see you are in fact a fella, I feel much less inadequate now. :)

Thanks for the tip Rachel, I'll have a Google around and see what I can find. It's good to compare to get an idea of what's being done at other clubs.:target:

Cheers Berny,
Some good stuff on that thread. I found it encouraging that some BB archers could keep up with sighted ones. I was surprised that some people use three fingers under for all distances. I only use it for 20y, then I find that other anchor points put my pile somewhere on the boss.

Hi Riceburner,
Point on @ 100y is impressive. My Bow is 36lbs too, point on at a mere 70 meters. I anchor below my chin at this distance.
Cheers
Tony

Unfortunately that was last year - doesn't seem to be the case this year. :( TBH I think my loose has deteriorated over the winter's field shooting.
