Dismantling a Tasco spotting scope

I have a 20-60x80 Tasco scope which has developed a rattle, which I soon discovered was caused by a loose screw rolling around inside the body. While the eyepiece does screw off, it doesn't give access to the main body cavity.

Bought via Amazon US and shipped to me (in New Zealand) by a friend so getting a warranty repair is unlikely. Also I hear their after sales service is awful.

Anyone know how to get inside one of these? There are no screws visible and I suspect it's glued together.

Yes It will be bonded together, and of course Nitrogen filled. Taking it apart, will mean it'll then be filled with air and liable to internal fogging with temperature changes. If the rattle doesn't inhibit function, I'd learn to live with it, otherwise you do really need to have it professionally repaired where it can be properly refilled.

Of course it's filled with nitrogen *face palm*

I think I'll learn to live with it for the meantime - at least until after the summer season ends.

I was concerned the screw would scratch one of the lenses but there's very little I can do about that right now, especially since the whole thing will be going on a plane with me very shortly, but perhaps I may take it as carry-on.

would a magnet hold the screw in place? I'm not sure how thick the casing is, but if you can keep the screw still then there is less chance of a lens getting scratched

I don't think Tasco fill with nitrogen, but as they are listed as waterproof and fog proof they must be, at least, purged. If the screw is rattling around inside the objective lens section it probably will scratch the coating at some point. Even so, you are unlikely to see it unless the sun catches it and even then it will almost certainly make bugger all difference. My old opticron was scratched to hell and it made very little difference. If you break the waterproof seal you will soon see the scope fog up on the next cool day :) I would put up with the rattle.

Genius idea and works like a charm.

Thanks :)
