Olymipic Compound ...

If you want to put another archery sport in the Olympics then make it indoor barebow. If you need convincing then look at the number of views of the Lancaster barebow event on YouTube compared to any other discipline at the Lancaster event.

IMO.
If you want to put another archery sport in the Olympics make it Barebow field or even better Primitive field with selfbows.
For pities sake we don't need compound... Olympic archer has degenerated into a money-go-round for manufacturers.
It isn't very televisual or entertaining.

I think one of the biggest hurdles is how do you explain to the IOC that you want to increase participation by 128 archers when they are already struggling to keep athlete numbers down.
I would have agreed if it were not up to host countries to decide what sports they wish to introduce and the fact that the Olympics had not just added 18 events and 474 athletes in:
baseball/softball
karate
skateboard
sports climbing
(this is not even real climbing)
and surfing
(don't get me started on surfing)

to the 2020 list.

Out of all the archery disciplines I would agree with this, even though I don't shoot field.

though those are what used to be called "demonstration sports*" having been picked by the local Olympic committee and have no guarantee of appearing in following games.

A better question might be the inclusion of 3x3 Basketball** as well as the regular Basketball, though I suspect a lot of the athletes of one will be in the other.

* - they are now "augmented" sports, which means their medals can be deemed as 'real' Olympic medals, as opposed to those that were won as demonstration sports.

** - if this isn't played on someone's front drive, with the net attached to the garage I will feel very cheated

Any sport can be dropped by the IOC. I think the modern pentathlon is currently at risk. I think participation numbers is a key driver for olympic sports selection so field barebow might struggle.

As things are and the cost of the games in it's current format the overall future of the Olympics could be in doubt. There are those that think it will be run across a continent rather than a country as individual countries cannot afford it.

100% agree, Olympic compound would be dull, at least with barebow field there would be the occasional miss. Olympic compound wouldn't make much of a spectator sport.

tbh I'vew never really understood why compounders shoot at 50m in the world cup. get them back to 90m and give them a 40cm face (I'll be fair - a full face not trips) ... lets see what they are really capable of when pushed to the limit! :mind-blow

there is talk of pushing them back to 60m maybe even 70m. Though 90m is unlikely because it makes it harder to find a field long enough.

Yup. I was a GamesMaker for the London Olympics - for the shooting. Lots of spectators were there because they just wanted to go to the Olympics - and didn't really care which sport it was. I doubt that any of them felt any desire to see indoor shooting again, let alone participate.

Olympic compound would be equally as dull. Nobody is interested in 10, 10, 10, 10... then the winner decided by closest to the centre.

Barebow field could really spark off some interest.

It is interesting to hear that the public like to see misses.

At Nottingham for the finals of The European Championships before Rio, the final was in front of city hall.

Shoppers were able to see the targets (almost in line) and a big screen (the rest of the field hidden by the stands) I ventured out to mingle and listen to what these people were saying.
The average time watching was 20 mins
The format was quickly understood
It was of some amusement when the crowd cheered 10's and groaned at 9's

At the elite level I believe people want to see the best make sport look easy - imagine watching snooker and the breaks were just in the teens or it took 30 darts to check out a 501, the same with football and rugby players skill makes the game look easy.
Field archery is already covered on Youtube - after a while it is rather boring perhaps we have to face up to the fact that in it's current format it is not really television friendly. Although contrary to this 2012 Archery was the 3rd most watch sport even with the lack of GBR representation in the later stages so lots of mixed messages. Participation after 2012 received a massive boost (now squandered) and interest with beginners courses full and clubs struggling to cope with the influx of new members.

Would they have cheered 10s if that was all that was scored?

It's the reason I tried watching basketball once - and no more. It seemed like they could have started at 100 each and played for two minutes. Scoring a basket wasn't worth a cheer.

people are odd about scoring in sports
have watched a fair amount of ice hockey in the states (dallas stars) ... they barely cheer the goals but a fight ... that gets folks on their feet

There was something enjoyable watching one arrow shoot-offs between barebows.... going to their seventh arrow because it's the closest scoring arrow that wins... :rotfl: though I'm guessing the new distance of 50m might lower that a bit

Going on what a non archer said to me after watching the Commonwealth Games in India - yes

" ones with the wheels on their bows were really good, but the ones with the ski's were rubbish"

One of the interesting things about the Commonwealth Games was that even though both bowstyles were shooting 70m and the set system at least when Nicky Hunt won her gold medal the score was reported as 146-145 and not 6-4 as it actually was. bbc.cu.uk

I'm always amused when I see a bunch of archers talking about compound in the Olympics.
In the last ten years, I've written about why it will never be included many times. Typically I'd use logical examples and reasons to hammer the obvious home, but today I think I'd like to explore the other direction.
What would happen if compound WAS in the Olympics?

It doesn't take much to understand exactly what would happen.
Every four years, the people who win at the world cups would have another competition to win at.
The countries who give financial incentives to win medals would start to dominate even more. That thing with Korea and compounds, yeah? You think that they won't dominate there as well in a few years?
The budgets of Olympic recurve teams would be less, provided that recurve wasn't dropped entirely.
99.9 percent of archer's lives wouldn't change at all, except for one significant thing:

Compound archers all around the world would be able to stop explaining to their clueless relatives that compounds aren't used at the Olympics.

The day that people who aren't archers want to see compound in the Olympics is an indication of potential.
I never expect to see it.
