Nock removal tool

As my only real (minimal) value here is for off topic gun related reminiscences, comedy value, ebay picks, and cheap alternatives to specialist equipment, I thought I'd run this idea past the board. Having recently had to remove a busted nock without access to a dedicated tool (it's amazing what you can do with a lighter, a pair of pliers, and a small screw) I did pay slightly more attention to offerings from the likes of Beiter designed for the same purpose. On closer inspection, the ?10+ tool is essentially a thin metal bar with a sort of ridged tip designed to be heated and inserted into the nock, melting the plastic which then sets on the ridges giving some purchase. A bit of investigating revealed that the business end of the tool is practically identical to a sort of ear pick popular in the far east for cleaning your lugs out. Good news is that they can be had direct from China on ebay for a quid including shipping. See item 251045756527 for an example.

The usefulness of this idea is directly proportional to the number of times anyone has said "gee, I wish I had a tool that made getting nocks out on the rare occasion that they break well into the shaft" - which I would gamble is a fairly low number. However, if you can score a stuck nock tool for a quid, then I'd imagine that more of them would find their way into bow cases and tool boxes across the land.

Oh, and contrary to popular belief, I neither work for ebay or the Chinese board of trade, nor am I part of a Chinese sleeper cell just waiting to crush all you imperialist pig dogs once we have destroyed your economy with our crappy low quality knocked off goods. All together now - "you're more than a number in my little red book..." Ok, remove 'comedy value' from my list of dubious traits - I'll stick to ebay.

I just use a small screw, a pair of pliers and a lighter... ;)

well, that and now most of my arrows use pins, so no broken nock left in shaft!!

I also use pin nocks exclusively now, but before, I formed a tool out of a straightened fish hook. Heat, push in until the barb is inside the plastic, cool and pull. Don't have to wait 27-45 days for shipping from Shanghai. Trick was to find a cheaply make hook that would bend rather than break.

Drywall screw worked almost as well.

I would have made my post more entertaining, but I forgot my box of metaphors at work...

Ah-ha, but can you also clean your ears with a small screw, pliers, and a lighter? CHECK MATE I BELIEVE SIR!!!! Lol

Yeah, that's how I usually do it, but this little device is the size of a small pen and gives enough grip to negate the need for pliers. Anyhoo, just an idea.

I'm with these guys I'm afraid, I use pins on all my outdoor arrows, and I only shoot 1 per face with my indoor arrows. Never had to remove a broken nock.

I've never actually tried pin nocks as it felt like added complexity, though the obvious 'un Robin Hoodable' nature makes a whole lot of sense. I just like Accunocks and have them on most of my arrows (like accunocks aren't an added complexity, right?)

Never forget that if you seriously having trouble with removing a broken nock, if you whip the point off, then you can access the nock from the other end (push instead of trying to get a grip to pull).

That's a good point, but you need something thin enough to fit in the shaft, thirty inches long, and stiff enough to actually pound the nock out. Sainsbury's quick cook value spaghetti ain't gonna cut it. Plus it's either going to be a bitch to fit in your tool kit, or a serious stabbing risk every time you reach for an arrow if you carry it in your quiver. I just tried a cleaning rod and it's too thick and not long enough.

Here it is.. the patent pending compressed air nock removal tool: :)

arrowlauncher.JPG

(Actually it's a compressed air arrow launcher for flight analysis......up to 75 m/s pretty accurate launch speed)

All you need to remember is that as with Irish bagpipes you need to suck instead of blow,

A length of 3 or 4mm dia TIG stainless steel welding wire does this! I keep it in my arrow case.

Last 5 times I've had a broken nock stuck in a shaft the hardest part has been getting the other sodding arrow out ! God I love pin nocks :)

I like the launcher. I wonder if a CO2 bicycle pump adapted to screw into an insert would blow a stuck nock out of an arrow?
